Officials said they stopped the trial of estrogen-only in post-menopausal women one year early because it did not live up to hopes of reducing heart disease, but did slightly increase the risk of stroke. The study's leader said the findings reinforced previous recommendations that hormone therapy should not be taken to prevent heart disease, but some women may still use the treatment to reduce the symptoms of menopause and lower the risk of osteoporosis.
