Thanks to the after-school Soy Unica, Soy Latina (I'm Unique, I'm Latina) program, 125 elementary Hispanic girls in metro Atlanta have been learning communication techniques, anger management and other problem-solving skills. The program, now in 20 states, was created after a 1999 study by a coalition of Hispanic social services organizations found 30% of Hispanic females in high schools had seriously contemplated suicide.
