Despite the recent closure of the Davis Dam to all but emergency vehicles due to terrorist concerns, the landmark Hoover Dam between Arizona and Nevada remains open. One reason is because there are simply no other alternatives for crossing the Colorado River on U.S. Highway 93, but also because, with more than 4.3 million yards of concrete and 35,000 tons of reinforced steel, the dam would likely sustain a vehicle-based explosion, whereas the same explosion could significantly damage the earthfill construction of the Davis Dam.
