Detroit-area snack makers say they see little effect from the low-carb diet trend, and they won't introduce reduced-carb snacks like the national brands. "There is no such thing as a low-carb chip," says Uncle Ray's CEO "Uncle Ray" Jenkins. The president of Better Made Snack Foods agrees, calling the Atkins craze a fad that will pass. Detroit-area snackers consume an average of 7 pounds of potato chips per person annually, nearly double the national average.
