Tonsillectomy is not performed nearly as commonly on children as it has been in previous generations, but some health care providers say the pendulum should swing back in order to address an increasing amount of sleep problems. Sleep apnea, for instance, characterized by pauses in breathing through the night, can cause agitation, hyperactivity and cognitive problems. Many tonsillectomies are performed to alleviate these complications.
