New research shows a link between an weight gain and joint pain, and researchers conclude controlling weight and getting enough exercise can help reduce the risk of arthritis. Osteoarthritis tends to develop as the body ages and cartilage that cushions the joints wears away, but cartilage benefits from movement, and even moderate activity, such as brisk walking, can help keep cartilage healthy.
