Medtronic says it is recalling at least 1,800 implanted heart defibrillators following the deaths of four patients that may have been linked to malfunctioning devices. Health care providers will need to wave a device over patients' chests to test whether the defibrillators are working, and if there are problems, the devices must be surgically removed. Medtronic estimates about 0.05% of the devices may have the charging defect.
