U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturers are working on ways to prevent the abuse of their pain-relieving drugs by Americans who want to get high on them rather than take them to reduce the severe chronic pain for which they are approved. The drugmakers have rewritten warning labels, set up tracking systems to follow the pills through the distribution pipeline and are reformulating some of the pills to add ingredients that block euphoria or cause a burning sensation .
