This spring, alternative proms based on religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity and disability, are offering safe haven for students who prefer to celebrate with their own kind. Former principal Kendall Brantley says the private separate proms for white, black and Hispanic students at Toombs County (Ga.) High School stem from the desires of students with similar backgrounds to mix with each other, rather than from racism.
