The FDA, citing safety issues, decided the Plan B emergency contraception pill will not be allowed to be sold on an over-the-counter basis. Although the agency's own panel of experts recommended OTC status for Barr Pharmaceuticals' contraceptive drug, FDA officials decided the case for freer distribution had not been made. The agency suggested it would revisit the issue if Barr could prove the pill was safe for younger women or provide a plan that would protect against the pill's availability to underage girls.
