Denver health officials say calls about abuse of cough medicines containing dextromethorphan were up 20% in 2003, and one death was attributed to the practice in 2004. DXM can produce hallucinations in larger doses, but it also can lead to permanent kidney and liver damage. Some stores keep medicines containing DXM behind the counter and limit the amount that can be purchased, but one pharmacist says he won't sell the medicines to teenagers at all.
