Authorities see growing problems with so-called phishing, a criminal practice in which fake e-mails and Web sites are used to fool individuals into giving up personal data such as passwords for checking accounts. Phishing caused $2.4 billion in fraud over the last year, or on average $1,200 per victim, according to Gartner, which also said 57 million U.S. consumers had received a phishing e-mail during that time.
