With the number of people with kidney failure rising every year, dialysis centers are strained, but a new home-dialysis machine may offer a much more convenient alternative. The machine, developed by Lincolnshire, Ill.-based Aksys is being tested by about 100 patients in the U.S. and Britain, and while training is intensive, the company estimates that as many as 20% to 30% of patients with end-stage renal disease could be candidates for the technique.
