To improve the poor oral skills of 12- to 16-year-olds, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in England is advising teachers to tape students' conversations and play them back in class so they can be analyzed. Belinda Singleton, an executive at the English Speaking Board, blames the decline in young people's speaking skills on text messaging, television and a general narrowing of the vocabulary.
