Last month, the U.S. Department of Education formally endorsed the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard, which encourages publishers to offer traditional textbooks in Extensible Markup Language (XML) format. The XML file standard, which will likely be mandated in the reauthorized Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, will make it easier for handicapped students to obtain Braille and text-to-speech books.
