In an editorial, charter school founder Marvin Hoffman questions why the Illinois State Board of Education decided to eliminate the writing section of certain grades' ISAT exams at a time when other states, as well as developers of the SAT and ACT, are adding mandatory writing tests. He said the writing assessment, even if teachers were guilty of teaching to it, had encouraged students to develop skills in reasoning and expression.
