Low levels of thyroid hormone, which regulates metabolism, have long been associated with congenital abnormalities, but researchers now say having too much thyroid hormone may be just as dangerous to a fetus. The findings are significant in light of a recent study suggesting that women treated for underactive thyroid who become pregnant should increase their dose thyroid hormone by 29%, and experts in the new study say hormonal replacement must be fine-tuned to prevent exceeding normal requirements.
