The government says it has developed eight new cotton varieties, including insect-resistant transgenic cotton widely planted in the nation, as a result of its Transgenic Tech System of Cotton Commercialization. The system is reported to produce more than 6,000 plants a year and to have improved 20 varieties of the crop so the fibers are stronger and the plants resist insects and disease, allowing more than a 90% survival rate for transplants.
