The American Medical Association says Congress should give the HHS the authority to negotiate contracts with drug manufacturers covered under the new Medicare prescription drug law. Currently the Medicare law says the government "may not interfere" in those negotiations with drug companies. The AMA said some agencies within the federal government have saved substantial dollars for their beneficiaries and that other medical services have long been under government-imposed fee limits.
