Sodium valproate, taken to prevent seizures in epileptic patients, causes lower IQs in children born to women who use the drug during pregnancy, U.K. researchers report. The drug previously had been linked to birth defects, but the new research is the first to indicate an effect on children's IQs. The results pose a dilemma for women because studies also show the seizures prevented by sodium valproate can cause similar problems in unborn babies.
