New fire codes implemented in Rhode Island in the wake of a disastrous nightclub blaze have led to confusion throughout the state on the part of builders, facilities managers and property owners. There are not enough fire inspectors to enforce the codes, and different state offices give different answers to the same questions, leading to chaos, industry representatives told a legislative committee recently. The state has "an extraordinary public information problem, and assets are needed to inform the public and address some of the chaos," said the head of the Associated General Contractors' Rhode Island chapter.
