The U.S. Navy wants unmanned underwater vehicles that either surface ships or submarines can use. For example, one type of proposed UUV could be carried by submarines and then target submarines in coastal areas.
The Department of Homeland Security will spend more than one-third of its $32 billion budget on securing U.S. borders and transportation systems. The budget includes $5.1 billion for the Transportation Security Administration and $662 million for the Federal Air Marshal Service. However, a Democratic report critical of the budget bill pointed out that there are shortcomings in cargo inspections for nuclear materials and that there is no comprehensive terrorist watch list.
NASA conducted a full-scale trial run last week in which mission control staff worked via radio link with astronauts in a model spacecraft to practice carrying out a difficult outer-space task. The "integrated sim" was the first to be carried out since the space shuttle Columbia's accident and is a step toward resuming shuttle missions.
A report in the Wall Street Journal says upstart Primaris Airlines will announce that it will order 20 Boeing 7E7 Dreamliners and 20 737-800s. The order would make Primaris the first U.S. carrier to fly the 7E7. List prices value the order at $3.8 billion, with deliveries to start in 2007. A Boeing spokesman confirmed Primaris had ordered the planes.
