Genencor is working with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to make ethanol from cellulose, a carbon-based chemical found in wood, stalks and leaves. Biofuel is an expensive form of fuel, but Genencor recently announced it has dropped the cost of enzymes derived from the plant source from $5 per gallon of ethanol made to as little as 10 cents.
