The combination involves taking the vitamin niacin on top of cholesterol-lowering statins, possibly creating a new method for treating high cholesterol. The study found the two-pronged approach did a better job of slowing heart disease progression than one medicine alone and worked by lowering LDL, or "bad," cholesterol while increasing HDL, or "good," cholesterol.
