A way has been found to bypass healthy tissue and put cancer drugs directly into tumors, according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Researchers reported they were successful in delivering interferon beta, already known to cause side effects and short-lived benefits to the patient, directly to tumors in mice by attaching the interferon beta gene to a type of stem cell. Human trials may begin soon, the lead researcher says.
