Although Wang Zheng finds the traditional curriculum stultifying, the 14-year-old refuses to drop out of school while he pursues an unorthodox, self-directed study program of history, literature and other subjects. While many Chinese families would typically prefer their only child follow the tried-and-true path to academic success, Wang Zheng's family has given him unusual latitude in deciding what and how he wants to learn.
