New research suggests millions of patients were unnecessarily prescribed Vioxx and Celebrex painkillers in the drugs' first years on the market, when cheaper drugs likely would have sufficed. The drugs' primary advantages were that they caused fewer stomach problems than such over-the-counter alternatives as ibuprofen, but as many as two-thirds of patients using Vioxx and Celebrex were at low risk for such problems.
