Despite common belief, people with Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, can do much more than control their blood sugar to prevent nerve damage that could lead to a foot or leg amputation, according to a new study. Researchers say that obesity, high blood pressure and smoking are almost as important as blood-sugar levels in predicting nerve problems among Type 1 diabetics, and such patients should be advised to keep those factors under control.
