Taking advantage of the publicity surrounding the recent security breach at ChoicePoint, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D.-N.Y., is taking on the "data mining" industry, and pointing a finger at Westlaw in particular. At a news conference, Schumer demonstrated how his staffers used the service to obtain personal data on public figures. Representatives for the online legal research service said Westlaw's privacy policies "go beyond federal law and current industry standards."
