Vermont legislators are considering legislation that would, in part, hold manufacturers of biotech seeds responsible for any damages caused, and not the farmers who grow them. The bill also would grant protection to farmers who use biotech seed that later cross-pollinates nonbiotech crops. If the legislation is passed, Vermont would be the first state in the nation to make manufacturers liable instead of farmers for the accidental spread of biotech pollen, but Montana is considering a similar measure.
