To combat flagging sales, Mattel's Barbie Doll is stepping out as a branded entertainment mogul, with a special "American Idol" theme in which the iconic blonde doll and two of her girlfriends compete in an online version of the hit Fox TV show. Mattel reports that 1.2 million visitors recorded votes on the Barbie Web site for the winner of the fictitious contest, and the company plans to announce the winner in a commercial timed to appear during the "American Idol" finals in late May.
