The U.S.-Canadian border -- long a nearly invisible line to the North American beef industry -- is now the front in a battle, the outcome of which is of tremendous importance to both U.S. and Canadian ranchers. Even while U.S. negotiators pressure Asian countries to reopen their markets to American beef, ranchers here say the border should remain closed to cattle from Canada, where four cases of BSE have been detected.
