But Brian McWilliams, author of "Spam Kings," argues that the proclivity of Windows computers to be hijacked and used as so-called spam zombies is a major contributor to the problem. McWilliams cites experts who say to combat spam, Microsoft "must first stop worrying about what's good for its business, and concentrate instead on what's best for the Internet as a whole."
The U.S. government has launched its first criminal prosecutions under the "can spam" law, arresting four individuals in Detroit. The people, who were accused of, among other things, hiding their identities in hundreds of thousands of unsolicited e-mails, operated a company that sold weight-loss patches under the names AIT Herbal, Avatar Nutrition and others.
