In an opinion piece, Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts defended his opposition on allowing human embryos to be cloned for stem cell research, saying the research uses "a genetically complete human embryo" that is manipulated, experimented on and then destroyed and discarded. His position conflicts with research being carried out at Harvard University's Stem Cell Institute, where researchers see the stem cells as providing the source of cures for a variety of diseases.
