Farm-state senators and many governors say the Republican-backed energy bill up for U.S. House debate today does not do enough to increase the use of the corn-based product in gasoline. While the legislation currently requires refiners to use 5 billion gallons of ethanol a year by 2012, they are urging lawmakers to increase that amount to 8 billion gallons and provide federal help to encourage production from other noncorn sources.
