Hotels in New York are increasingly realizing the value of their rooftops, which architect Stephen Jacobs called "the most underdeveloped real estate in the city." Jacobs designed the Hotel Gansevoort, which features a rooftop pool, in addition to a bar, garden areas and meeting space, and more hotels are expanding in rooftop spaces, which are, unlike lower floors, unencumbered by vertical columns that are part of a building's structure.
