Private investor Acon Investments has acquired Hispanic grocery retailer Fiesta Mart, and the new owners have appointed former Bi-Lo CEO Michael Byars to succeed Fiesta's retiring Chief Executive Louis Katopodis. The Houston-based 60-store chain, which will maintain its supply agreement with C&S Wholesale Grocers after the sale, was operated by family owners prior to the acquisition.
C&S Wholesale Grocers has been chosen by Bi-Lo Holding to provide warehouse, procurement and distribution services to Winn-Dixie, while retaining responsibility for Bi-Lo stores. "C&S is very excited about extending its eight-year relationship with Bi-Lo to include the Winn-Dixie stores and to further extending our presence in the South," said Rick Cohen, C&S chairman and CEO.
Ahold-owned Giant Food unit Tops Markets, LLC, will sell off 12 stores in eastern New York state to C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Tops says it is selling the stores to concentrate on its western New York market.
Five grocery chains were honored by the Food Marketing Institute for their community-based initiatives at the 2005 FMI Show in Chicago this week. Three companies Wakerfern Food Corp., Ukrops and C&S Wholesale Grocers won for their work on hunger relief, while Food Lion was cited for raising $17 million for the Childrens Miracle Network and White Rose Foods was recognized for a variety of programs reaching ethnic communities.
Bi-Lo Holdings, the new owner of Bi-Lo and Bruno's Supermarkets, will sell its warehouse facilities and transfer distribution and replenishment functions to C&S Wholesale Grocers, the company announced. Dean Cohagan, the president and CEO of Bi-Lo and Bruno's said the move would enable the chains to focus on "operating great supermarkets and providing exceptional customer service."
