The fiber glut is as bad now as it was five years ago, but the economics of fiber have changed substantially. Now, companies can buy dark fiber lines at cut rates, and some are snapping it up to gain more control over their data networks. Still, analysts say it's unlikely the glut will disappear anytime soon, as dark fiber is expensive to light and technological advances have enabled providers to squeeze ever more bandwidth out of existing lines.
