Australia's biotech companies may find it necessary to leave the country if it fails to adopt biotech crops already in use in other countries, according to the Agriculture and Food Policy Reference Group, an arm of the Australian government. The group said in a paper that 8 million farmers in 17 countries grow biotech crops, but Australia still bans them, placing it and the country's biotech companies at a competitive disadvantage.
