Although some skeptics question whether the improvements in this year's reading and math scores of New York City fifth-graders are valid, principals and school officials say the gains are the payoff from years of hard work. They credit a combination of old and new programs, including Saturday classes, better data analysis and the expansion of kindergarten nearly a decade ago, as factors fueling the double-digit increases.
