Scientists are using genetics and biotechnology to try to better understand autoimmune diseases, a category that includes an estimated 80 diseases from the familiar, such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Type I diabetes, to others less well known. Little is understood about the diseases or how to treat them, but recent work leads researchers to suspect a combination of genes creates susceptibility to the diseases and an external factor sets them off.
