The Center for Public Integrity, a public watchdog group, says the pharmaceutical industry has had recent success dealing with Congress because it spent more than $800 million since 1998, including the hiring of nearly 1,300 lobbyists in the past year. The group said the industry spent a record $128 million last year alone, outspending all other business sectors. But an official of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America dismissed the report as "biased and one-sided" and said it failed to note the lives saved by medicines.
