BSE may be passed on from a mother animal to her fetus, scientists report in the Veterinary Record. The disease was known to spread through feed that contained cattle tissue, but the study demonstrated it also can spread from ewe to lamb, meaning it could still be present in meat from sheep in Europe. That would be a greater threat to humans than BSE from cows because sheep tissues can carry much more of the disease.
