Tesco PLC has tasked a team of senior executives with studying national and regional U.S. supermarket chains with an eye toward expanding its retailing empire, according to a "well-placed" source cited by U.K. paper The Mail. Safeway, Meijer and Wegmans are all considered potential targets. The U.K.-based retailer is also said to have met with consumer goods firms Procter & Gamble Co. and Unilever to iron out supply chain issues.
