The University of Michigan announced $10.5 million in new funding to expand its stem cell research program, with emphasis on areas such as how specific tissues are formed and how cells communicate with one another, and to establish an interdisciplinary center for stem cell research. University president Mary Sue Coleman said stem cell research is "one of the most important areas in biomedical research today" and already has yielded "key insights" into human biology.
