New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, R, and former NBA player Julius Erving are asking the U.S. Senate to approve a bill to establish a national cord blood stem cell program and expand the current bone marrow stem cell program. The bill, sponsored by Smith, passed the House 431-1 earlier this year, but a companion bill has not been brought to a vote in the Senate. Erving supports the bill because cord blood has been used to treat sickle cell anemia, and he thinks the legislation could help save lives.
