A raft of new technologies is changing the world of outdoor advertising, from digital messages that change with the time of day in restaurants and other retail outlets to futuristic Web cams that work with computer programs to estimate the age and gender of passersby and target ads accordingly. Research firm Frost & Sullivan estimates the market in digital signage will grow from $148.9 million in 2004 to $489.7 million in 2011.
