Use of bone densitometry and treatment for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis is highly cost-effective, even in elderly women, according to new research. Screening of women age 65 or older for osteoporosis and treating those found to have bone thinning with alendronate (Fosamax) cost less than $50,000 per quality-adjusted life-year gained at all ages, researchers found.
