MTV Networks reportedly is investing $50 million in wireless startup Amp'd Mobile. As part of the deal, MTV will provide content such as ring tones, pictures and video for the MVNO's mobile phone service.
North America's wireless carriers may gradually shift to GSM from CDMA, Siemens mobile networks chief Christoph Catselitz said. "Latin America is already moving from CDMA technologies to GSM," Catselitz said. "I would not bet on North America continuing with CDMA."
HBO has signed a deal with wireless provider Cingular to offer some of its programs on cell phones. The cable network is planning two services for Cingular customers -- HBO Mobile and HBO Family Mobile.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said he supports a shift toward a "technology-neutral" approach to the Universal Service Fund that collects fees using a "numbers-based approach." Congress is expected to take up the issue of USF reform beginning next year as it grapples with the growth of IP telephony.
Opera, a maker of Web browsers for mobile phones, said it has not been approached by Google or any other suitors about a possible takeover. Rumors of a possible deal with Google have pushed Opera's stock price to its highest level since October.
