A review of studies involving 40,000 women with early breast cancer indicates that radiotherapy following localized surgery for breast cancer can improve the chance for long-term survival. Since little is known about long-term effectiveness, surgeons often follow up operations for malignant tumors in the breast with chemotherapy and hormone therapy, but the findings indicate that radiotherapy can indeed extend survival rates beyond those who do not receive the treatment.
